What closet materials hold up best to South Florida humidity and salt air?
Moisture-rated engineered panels with fully sealed edges hold up best in South Florida, which is why we build in them rather than in solid wood. Solid wood moves with humidity: it swells in summer, contracts under constant air conditioning, and doors and drawers stop lining up. Engineered panels are dimensionally stable, so a door that closes flush in January still closes flush in August. Near the coast the bigger enemy is salt in the air, which attacks metal, so hardware selection matters as much as the panel itself.
What is the difference between melamine, MDF, plywood and thermofoil?
They are two different things: melamine and thermofoil are surfaces, while MDF and plywood are the core underneath. Melamine is a resin-saturated decorative paper fused to the panel under heat and pressure, which gives a hard, scratch-resistant, easy-to-clean face. Thermofoil is a vinyl skin vacuum-formed over a shaped MDF door, which is how you get seamless curves and profiles in one piece. MDF is a dense, uniform core that machines cleanly and takes profiles and paint well. Plywood is layered veneer, lighter for its strength and the usual choice where screw-holding power matters most.
Why does edgebanding determine how long a closet lasts?
Edgebanding determines lifespan because the exposed edge is where humidity gets into the panel. The decorative face of a panel is sealed at the factory, but every cut we make opens raw core to the air. If that edge is banded thin, or glued with a low-grade adhesive, it lifts at the corners, and once it lifts the panel wicks moisture and swells from the edge inward. That is the single most common failure we see in closets built by others in this climate, and it is why the edge is the detail worth asking any company about before you sign.
Is a wall-hung closet better than one that sits on the floor?
Wall-hung systems are generally the better choice in South Florida because nothing touches the floor. All the weight transfers into a rail anchored to the wall, so the panels stay clear of mopping water, of the humidity that collects at floor level, and of any minor flooding. It also makes cleaning underneath trivial and makes the room read larger, because you see continuous floor. Floor-based systems still make sense where the load is heavy or the wall cannot be anchored properly, and we decide that per project once we see the wall.
How far can a closet shelf span before it sags?
Keep unsupported shelf spans at about 32 in (81 cm) or less and sagging stops being a concern. Beyond that, an engineered panel shelf loaded with folded denim or handbags will bow over time, and the bow is permanent. The fixes are straightforward: add a vertical divider, thicken the shelf, or add a support cleat. This is one of the things a 3D design catches before fabrication, because on paper a long open shelf looks generous and in practice it is the first thing that fails.
What hardware do you use in a custom closet?
We specify soft-close hardware as standard: concealed hinges and undermount drawer slides that pull the drawer in and stop it from slamming. Hardware is where a closet is used every single day, so it is also where cheap choices show up first, usually as drawers that start to drop or drag within a couple of years. Near the water we pay extra attention to finish and corrosion resistance, because salt air reaches hardware long before it reaches the panels. The grade and quantity of hardware is also one of the main things that moves a project budget.
