Melamine, MDF, plywood or thermofoil: what lasts here.

The same panel that performs fine in Denver can fail in Miami. Heat, humidity and coastal salt air are the real test in South Florida, and they decide which closet materials hold their shape and which ones quietly swell or peel.

Short answer

For a closet in South Florida, moisture-resistant plywood is the most stable material for the structure, and melamine over a well sealed core is the practical choice for interiors and shelving. Thermofoil gives the cleanest sealed surface but is the most sensitive to heat and humidity over time. In this climate the edge sealing matters as much as the material, because an exposed core swells long before the visible surface ever gives out.

Why the Florida climate changes the answer

Cabinet materials are usually compared on cost and looks. In South Florida a third factor outweighs both: how the material behaves in warm, humid air, and near the coast, in salt. Humidity does not only sit on a surface. It works into any open edge or chip and reaches the core, where most closet panels are weakest. Salt-laden air off the ocean speeds up the failure of cheap glue lines, so a panel that survives inland can delaminate a few blocks from the water.

That is why a national manufacturer, writing from a dry warehouse in another state, cannot really answer this question for your home. We build for this climate every week from our workshop in Medley, and the differences below are what we see hold up and what we see come back.

Plywood: the structural default

When strength and stability decide the outcome, plywood wins. Its cross-laminated layers pull against each other and resist the warping that humidity provokes in solid lumber, and it holds a screw far better than any pressed board. For a walk-in closet with long hanging sections and loaded shelves, or for any piece that sits low near a floor that can get damp, plywood is our default core. Near the coast we specify grades built with glues made to survive salt air.

Melamine: the practical interior

Most of what you touch inside a well-built closet can be melamine, and that is a strength, not a compromise. The thermally fused surface shrugs off humidity, wipes clean and comes in a wide range of finishes. The one rule that matters in this climate is edge sealing. A melamine panel fails from the edge inward, so every cut edge has to be properly banded. That is a manufacturing discipline, and it is exactly the kind of detail that separates a piece cut on a controlled CNC line from one assembled quickly on site.

MDF and thermofoil: where each belongs

MDF gives a painted door a flawless, grain-free face, which is why it is the right core for detailed painted fronts. It simply has to stay out of standing moisture, and its moisture-resistant grade helps in humid rooms. Thermofoil is the most misunderstood of the four. Its seamless wrap is genuinely excellent at keeping water off a surface, but South Florida heat is hard on the bond that holds the film to the core, and a peeled panel cannot be repaired, only replaced. We use it deliberately and keep it away from heat, rather than treating it as a default for a custom kitchen or a sunlit closet.

We match each part to its job: plywood where strength and damp resistance matter, melamine for the interiors and shelving you use every day, MDF for painted fronts, and thermofoil only where heat exposure is low. What is the best closet material for humidity in Florida?

For the structure of a closet in South Florida, moisture-resistant plywood is the most stable choice because its cross-laminated layers resist warping and hold screws even when the air is damp. Melamine over a well sealed core is an excellent, practical option for closet interiors, which live away from the splash zone. The key in this climate is not only the material but the quality of the edge sealing, since an exposed core swells long before the surface ever fails.

Does thermofoil hold up in South Florida heat and humidity?

Thermofoil seals a surface beautifully, but in South Florida heat and humidity the adhesive bond between the vinyl film and its MDF core can fail over time, and the foil begins to peel. It is most vulnerable near heat sources and south-facing windows. Once thermofoil peels it cannot be repaired, only replaced. We use it selectively and steer clients toward it only where heat exposure is low.

Is melamine or plywood better for a closet?

They answer different questions. Plywood is the stronger structural material, so it is our default for boxes that carry weight or sit in damp conditions. Melamine gives you a hard, wipe-clean, moisture-resistant surface in a wide range of looks at a sensible cost, which makes it ideal for shelving and interiors. Many of our closets use both, plywood where strength matters and melamine where finish matters.

Does salt air near the coast affect closet materials?

Salt-laden coastal air accelerates the breakdown of weak glue lines, which is why standard particleboard and standard MDF struggle near the water. Marine-grade and moisture-resistant panels use resins built to survive that exposure. For a home in Key Biscayne, Miami Beach or the barrier islands, specifying the right core and fully sealed edges matters more than it would inland.
